Runes
3 levels: ideographic, phonetic, conceptual

Eight Categories of Runic Names
If we examine the meaning of each rune‘s name we shall find it falls into one of 8 categories:

1. ANIMAL: Fehu - cattle: Uruz - aurochs [uer-ox - now extinct]; Ehwaz- horse; Mannaz - man.

2. SUPERNATURAL; Thurisaz - giant; Ansuz - god (generally thought to be Òðinn); Tiwaz -  the god Tyr; Ingwaz -
the god Frey; Algiz - ritual enclosure, protection.

3. HUMAN ACTIVITY; Raido - riding, journeying.

4. OBJECTS: Kenaz - torch; Gebo - gift: Pertho - fruit; Othala - inheritance.

5. HUMAN CONDITIONS: Wunjo - joy, perfection; Nauthiz - need.

6. NATURAL PHENOMENA: Hagalaz - hail; Isa - ice; Sowilo - sun; Laguz - water.

7. TREES: Eihwaz - yew; Berkano - birch.

8. TIMES: Jera - year, harvest; Dagaz - day.
